Parents and
First Grade Students,
Dinosaurs, dinosaurs, dinosaurs!! We will be doing science, math, social studies, and reading activities associated
with the unit on Dinosaurs. We have made fossils, dinosaur skeletons, and dinosaur habitats. We are also going
to try a little "dinosaur chow"! I love this unit and the students will really enjoy it too! Our reading
skills are really going to pick up this quarter and parents will see just how well your students are doing by reading with
them each night. Many more students started reading AR books this week. Please encourage your student to
read their books a couple of times before they test.

Planners/Agendas in 1st Grade... We will be continuing use of agenda/planners this school year. Your
child will write in their planner each day. Inside the planner you will find a daily log. Sometimes there will
be nothing written for the day. Other times, there may be a lot of information. First graders need time to learn
how to write in these and we will be working on this task the first couple of weeks of school. There is a small space
for parent comments and questions within the planner. I check the planners each day and will respond to any comments
or questions that you have written. Planners need to be returned each day. If these get lost, students will
be expected to pay for another one at $5.00.

DO YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS OR CONCERNS? Call me at home 347-2230 or at school 347-2411. Thank you for your time and I look forward to another productive year with your students.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Terri Smith

Accelerated Reader: Your child will begin Accelerated Reader, as they become more fluent readers. I will
be assessing students to see what level they are reading at and if they are prepared for the accelerated reader program I
will put them in. This program includes tests on the computer and students are expected to read the questions.
First graders take more time to become ready for these tests.
Friday Folders:

Each Friday, your child will
bring home a folder of their work for the week. Also included in this folder are any notes from the teacher or school.
Please take a moment to review the contents of your child’s folder with them. What a great opportunity for your
child to discuss what they have learned in school the past week! Please be careful to return the folder each Monday,
as your child will only receive one folder per quarter. Also, use the comment section on the folder to let me know if
you have any specific needs.
