We have art every Thursday. Last week students worked on a coloring project with school colors and warm or cold colors. This is a school wide project and we look forward to seeing the results.
This week, students made a picture using various lines.  It has been a great deal of fun.
Please make sure you ask your student how they like it.

Snacks

Aside from the snack shack, students are welcome to bring their own snacks to the classroom.  It is often difficult to make it from the time school starts at 8:00 to lunch at 11:30 without eating.  I encourage students to bring healthy snacks to help them fill the gap between meals.  Healthy snacks include but aren’t limited to, nuts, fruit, applesauce, yogurt, cheese and crackers.  If the snack is unhealthy like chips or candy bars, students will be asked to return it to their bags and save it for lunch.  They will be given one warning, but after that, students will be asked to put the food in the trash.

Planners & Agendas in 5th Grade

Our school is providing student planners again this year.  These are fantastic tools.  I believe they helped my students greatly last year by providing a way to stay organized.  The first planner is free but if it is misplaced, there is a $5 replacement fee.  It is important that students keep track of these because they are extremely useful.  We will spend time at the end of each day to fill in our assignments.  Students also use these as their reading logs.  Students are required to read 30 minutes each school night.  They are to write the title of their books in the space provided in the planner and note the number of minutes they read each day.  These planners are to be signed by parents on Monday when they return to class.  Please feel free to leave notes for me in the planners as I will be looking at them every Monday.

A Notice to Parents:
I would also like to invite students to bring water bottles to keep at their desks.  There is a water fountain in the classroom that students are welcome to use, but it is often easier to just have the water at their desks.  There will be no soda, sports drinks or energy drinks allowed in the classroom as they’re packed with sugar and could stain if spilled.  Again, if any of these things are brought to school, students will be asked to put it in their backpacks the first time and the second time they will be expected to dump it down the sink.

Friday Folders...

Friday folders will be sent home weekly.  They will include the students’ completed and graded work, a newsletter with classroom information and other important information regarding things going on in our school and community.  Please make sure to go through these papers over the weekend.

Reading Homework:
Every night, students are expected to read for thirty minutes as homework.  Students will keep track of their minutes and book in their planners.  Parent or guardian is expected to sign the planner on Thursday to note that their student did in fact do their reading.  I will try to give students enough time to work on their assignments in class, but that is not always possible and the left over work will need to be turned in the following morning. Occasionally, students will be assigned something that is strictly homework.

Please ask your students daily about their work and check their planners.

Book Reviews

Fifth graders, you will be doing book reviews on the books you are reading during DEAR and at home.  You are going to be responsible for doing a book review every four weeks.  You will sign up for your book reviews the first time, after that, you will need to have one completed every four weeks. You will have the choice of the kind of book you would like to do a report on from the following genres.  You must read a book from each genre before you can read another from the same genre.

Select from:

  •  Historical Fiction
  • Contemporary Realistic Fiction
  • Biography
  • Fantasy/Science Fiction
  • Mystery/Suspense
  • Action/Adventure

You will also have your choice of what type of book review you do.  You may do each review only once.  Select one that works well with the book you are reading.
