Dear Parents and Community Members!

The walls at MVSD are covered in art! Please come and take a tour the next time you are in the building.

Currently the first graders are working on some very colorful (talking) turkeys and just finished working on their voluptuous pumpkin sculptures, hopefully you will see them decorating a table or inside display (they aren't waterproof!)

The combined second and third graders are working with color and will be working on their color combinations this week. We made primary color symmetrical creatures.  Next week we will mute the colors for a fall scene painting.

Fourth graders learned how to draw horses last week. You can see the "Horsing Around" display in the hallway. This week Mrs. Weber is reading them the Mouse and the Motorcycle, and then they will create the lego motorcycles. We will be preparing for that project by talking about the process of art.

Fifth graders are working on tesselations and will finish those up right before Thanksgiving. Tesselations are actually tiles, as in terms of a mosaic. The greatest tesselation maker of our time was Maurits Cornelias Escher, better known as MC Escher. You can view his work at
www.mcescher.com. It is really fabulous.

Sixth graders are creating some out of the world art! We are studying Howie Green, who creates fantastical dimensional art on a flat surface. This week we drew the preliminary sketch of what we will be painting next week. You can see his work at
www.hgd.com. Check it out, and ask your 6th grader how to make your name in 3-D - they know how!

Please take a moment to look at the art work in the gallery that has been removed from the walls. We didn't have room to put every piece, but you might find one that is familiar!

Sincerely,

Ms. Barger

Volunteerism.
Quite often I will be sending home notes soliciting volunteers. Parental (grandparent, uncle, etc) involvement in school is so very healthy for your children. And children love to be helped! When you come in to volunteer, I will ask that you take the initiative to first help your own child and then feel free to roam the classroom and help others. An extra set of adult hands is super helpful! You will also see that students who get a concept or have figured out how to do something will be roaming the room helping others. That is perfect! There is a place for all types of students.

What students will need for art:

There will be multiple things later that I will ask the students to bring, but to start off the year, they will each need an art shirt that can be left at school. One of dad’s, mom’s or grandpa’s long sleeved button up shirts (which will be worn backwards) is the best bet. T-shirts will also work. But remember, short sleeves are short sleeves. Art is messy! Please label the shirt with your child’s name – or better yet, have them do it. And remember, give them the freedom to put their name where they want. (we call this artistic license and kids love having a license!)

If you ever have questions, please feel free to call me at school 347-2411 or at home before 10 p.m. 628-2340 or I can be reached via my school email rbarger@mvsd11.org or personal email: richellebarger@gmail.com.
